KIAN

After a quick stop at the lab and a chat with William and Roni, Kian joined Onegus in the conference room. “The good news is that there were no more signals. If the team doesn’t find anything at Chengdu, which is likely, I want them to continue to Lugu Lake and help Kalugal with the excavations over there. He’s actually planning to take Jacki and Darius and several of his men and fly directly there.”

“I don’t know whether to hope that they find something or that they don’t.” Onegus pulled a bottle of water from the fridge and opened it. “In any case, it will be an interesting experiment to see how well the Kra-ell get along with the Guardians.”

“Indeed.” Kian pulled out a chair and sat down. “Especially since Jade regards the two females as troublemakers. If they can behave and follow orders, then working with the Kra-ell should be a viable option.”

“Yeah, well. I have a problem with including warriors that haven’t gone through Guardian training in combined missions. I have the same misgiving about Kalugal’s men.”

Kian arched a brow. “They did remarkably well in Karelia and on the decoy ship. I think that they have proven their worth.”

“They did, and I appreciated the help, but I would like them to train with our men. I brought it up with Kalugal, and he said that they don’t have time. That’s nonsense. All I asked for was one weekend a month. I’m sure they can spare the time.”

“They probably don’t want to.” Kian glanced at his watch to check how much time he had left before his next meeting. “They are not eager to join missions. The only reason Kalugal volunteered their help in Karelia was that he didn’t want to be left out of the loop. Now that he’s a council member, he probably won’t be as quick to volunteer his men.”

Onegus chuckled. “Yeah, most likely. Kalugal views them as a resource, and he’s not the sharing type.”

“Right.” Kian leaned back. “I spoke to Roni, and he told me about the snooping he did on the guy Gilbert’s sister had met on the plane. Why did you consider him worthy of investigation?”

Kian was surprised that Onegus had even requested that of Roni based on a remark she’d made about the guy’s looks. The chief had good instincts, and if he felt the need to investigate, then he had a good reason to do that.

Onegus shrugged. “She gushed about how incredibly good-looking he was and compared him to Orion and me, so naturally, I got suspicious. Doomers are usually not that striking, but there could be exceptions. I should have known that she was exaggerating. I’ve seen his passport photo, and the guy is handsome, but he’s not in Orion’s league. He also seems to be who he claims to be. They spent half the night together, and he left early in the morning. When he visited her, he pretended to be the delivery guy, but that’s not a big deal.
